Emotional Eating

A lot of our emotions can be reflected in our eating habits. Personally, I’ve had a ‘nervous stomach’ as far as I can remember. Whenever I am upset, nervous, or anxious, eating becomes impossible. However, when I am stressed out or angry, eating becomes a non-stop activity. This is the difference between dealing with our emotions in a healthy way versus keeping them bottled up or trying to ignore or resist them. It is ok to allow ourselves to feel our emotions. They are there and they are a part of us. When we try to resist whatever it is that we are feeling, we empower emotions, and allow them to control us and our actions, for example, our eating habits. When we acknowledge our emotions, we can allow ourselves to feel what needs to be felt and allow the emotions to pass through. Developing healthy coping mechanisms to deal with our emotions is key. Things like meditation, exercise, music, reading, going for a walk or run, or any activity you enjoy can help alleviate the impact of emotional eating. Once we become conscious of what we are feeling, we can learn effective ways to deal with it. How do your emotions impact your eating habits?
